Search, View, Download Tutorial

This tutorial will show how to:

  • search for a product

  • view product information

  • select products for download

  • download the products

NOTE: All examples from ODE Mars.

1. Open ODE: https://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/mars

2. Select Data Products Search tab

Select the Data Products Search tab at the top of the page – it is tab #2.

3. Select

We’re going to search on all CRISM TRDR multispectral window observation’s that are in the range -34 to 43 latitude and 127 to 182 longitude and were observed in the month of November, 2006. To do this, first open the “Select Desired Data Sets” bar by clicking on it:

Click the All TRDR & DDR box:

Now, we want to restrict the TRDRs to just multispectral window observations. From the CRISM Product Primer (the link just above TRDR), we see that their Product IDs begin with msw. So we open the “Select a Product ID or filter by a partial Product ID” bar under the “Set Additional Filtering Parameters” by clicking on it and enter msw* into the box:

Next, we want to enter the lat/lon range restrictions. Scroll down and open the “Find a Product Center Latitude/Longitude” and click the bar:

If you have questions about how to use this section, click on the ? icon to the right. Now enter the lat/lon ranges in each of the boxes. If you click on the “Show Area On Map” it will show the area you have selected on the min-map of Mars, Mercury, Venus, or the Earth's Moon.

Next, let’s enter the observation time limit. Open the “Filter by Time Range” bar by clicking it and enter “2006-11” into the first box. Select the ? icon next to the time range for more information about how to use the time range filter.

Now we can preview our search results count by clicking the “Preview Search Results Summary” button. The search results summary provided a reasonable product count, so we can proceed with confidence about our search criteria.

Finally, we can elect to view our query results in a table or on a map. Let’s view it in a table by selecting the “View Results in Table” button:

4. Explore results

The results are displayed in a product results page with two panes. The left pane shows our query results. The right pane will be used to display information about specific products.

The results are sorted by Product ID, which displays the related TRDRs and DDRs near each other (See How to find CRISM Products for more information).

At this point you can add products to your “cart”. The cart is a product download tool that we’ll explore later. For now, let’s add all the products to the cart. Select the box under the “Update Cart” button. This will mark all products. Then we select the “Update Cart” button:

You can see that all the products are now in the cart.

Look at one of the products by clicking on a Product ID. The product detail page shows several things. More information about the page can be found by selecting the ? icon in the upper right corner. In the mean time, we can see a “browse” or summary view of the product. The “Meta Data” tab show more details for the product stored in ODE. The “Label” tab shows the product label. And the “Related Products” tab will show some of the related products such as whether this product is part of an MRO Coordinate Observation.

Assume that you decide you do not want this product. Select the “Remove Product from the Cart” button. The product detail page is updated by highlighting the “Add Product to Cart” and the “Remove Product from Cart” changes:

Notice that the products results page does not change. It will reflect the update the next time the page is refreshed.

At this stage you can also download specific PDS product files by clicking on the file name:

This download is an FTP download. Depending on your browser file type helper applications, this may or may not open the file directly. With most browsers, you can right-click to force a download with something like “Save Link As” (varies with browser).

You can also view the available derived files for this product by clicking the “Derived Files” tab.

These files can be downloaded with the same technique as the product files.

Let’s look at the products on the map by selecting the “View on Map” button at the top of the products results page:

We see the Mars, Mercury, Venus or Earth's Moon Map with the products:

All the products are concentrated on the right which is, of course, what we wanted. Remember we selected on TRDRs in that range. Zoom into that range by selecting the

in the upper left corner. Then select a point and drag. If you selected an area around your products, you should get something like this:

Feel free to explore the map more. You can get information by selecting the “Map Help” button in the tool bar.The speed of the map is heavily depending on your internet connection. Take your time until you know how the map system will perform. Just rapidly clicking on buttons and the map is counter productive.

Why don’t we take a look at a couple of the products. Select the button in the menu bar (the same that has the button). Click and drag around a couple of the products:

This results in two things: an area marked with your selection and a change in the View Selection Results tab of the console to the left. Now click the View Selection Results to view a summary of the PDS products selected and a search results summary.

You can also review the selected files by clicking the "View in Table” button in the console.

Note, if you then select the “View on Map” button, you’ll return to the map but your query will be cleared.

5. Download files

Let’s download the products selected. Select the “Download” tab at the top of any page:

Here, you can review the products selected for download by clicking on the "View Products Selected for Download" bar. This page allows a user to completely empty the cart or remove selected products from the cart. If you wanted to clear all products from the cart, simply click the "Empty the Cart" button. Uncheck the box next to a specific product, then click "Remove Unchecked Products from the Cart" button to remove individual products from the cart. But for this tutorial, we’re happy with the selected products.

Let’s included any derived files for the products in the cart by clicking the “Selected Product’s Derived Files” check box. This will include map projected footprint files for the products in the cart. We also want to make the download a "mini-archive". This will include in the download all data set documentation and supporting files. Click the "Mini-Archive Files" check box for this option. Ok, now let's continue - click the "Continue" button:

We want the files in Zip form, so click on the Zip radio button. Then enter our email address and submit the request.

A confirmation page is displayed that includes the request number. You will receive an email containing instructions for retrieving the Zip file containing the selected products, documentation, and supporting materials when the Geosciences Node has fulfilled your request.
