ShadowCam is a NASA-funded, Time Delay Integration(TDI) pushbroom imager onboard the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) satellite. It collects high-resolution images of the Moon’s permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) to provide critical information about the distribution and accessibility of water ice and other volatiles at spatial scales (1.7 m/pixel) required to mitigate risks and maximize the results of future exploration activities. See more information about ShadowCam in the ShadowCam factsheet.
The primary mission is to map albedo patterns in PSRs and interpret their nature, investigate the origin of anomalous radar signatures associated with some polar craters, document and interpret temporal changes of PSR albedo units, and provide hazard and trafficability information within PSRs for future landed elements.
The ShadowCam data archive includes raw products, calibrated products, and an assortment of derived ancillary products to provide additional context or convenience when using the dataset. Due to the long history of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission, the LROC (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera) heritage of ShadowCam, and the utility of combining the LROC and ShadowCam datasets, the image names are based on the LROC archive. The raw ShadowCam products are equivalent to LROC raw or Experiment Data Records (EDRs), and the calibrated ShadowCam products are equivalent to LROC Calibrated Data Records (CDRs).
