Mini-RF is an instrument on the LRO spacecraft. Up until December of 2010 it was capable of active burst and continuous mode SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging. The continuous mode images were used to create interferometry products. High-resolution SAR images of Polar Regions of the lunar surface were also obtained. The search for water ice, particularly in the polar regions of the Moon, is its primary science mission, but the instrument also characterizes the surface roughness and thickness of the regolith. Mini-RF Instrument Parameters are available in the Table 4-1 of file "Mini-RF SAR Bistatic PDS Data Product Software Interface Specification".
Note: SAR instrument orbited the Moon on two platforms: the Indian Space Research Organization’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft and NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. What it finds will support humans' return to the Moon.
LRO Mini-RF Products
Note: The Bistatic Radar data set has been migrated to PDS4 standard. The Bistatic PDS4 bundle contains new data products that were not archived on the old PDS3 volumes. These include calibration and housekeeping products that may prove useful to future researchers. In addition the PDS4 dataset combines the real and imaginary components of the calibrated data product from two files from the PDS3 dataset into one file in the new dataset; this makes it easier for users to correlate the real and imaginary components at each pixel location. The PDS4 dataset also includes browse JPGs of the derived data products to allow the users to visualize the data before delving into the data files. See LRO Mini-RF Bistatic Data Processing Description Document and README.TXT for details.

Bistatic Experiment Data Record - The Level 0 BSEDRs are bistatic radar images in range and azimuth orientation. They are radiometrically and polarimetrically calibrated and used to create Level 1 BSRDRs of the Stokes parameters and circular polarization ratio. See the documentation links below for additional information on BSEDR. |

Bistatic Reduced Data Record - See the documentation links below for additional information on BSRDR. |
Bistatic Derived Data Record - BSDDRs consist of pixel-dependent geometric information in a 6-band backplane image file. They include pixel-to-pixel values for the latitude, longitude, bistatic angle, incidence angle, and emission angle in degrees and the range to the surface in kilometers of the acquired data. See the documentation links below for additional information on BSDDR. |
