The Magellan Radio Science Subsystem (RSS) Line of Sight Acceleration Profile (LOSAPDR) dataset (PDS3 dataset_id: MGN-V-RSS-5-LOSAPDR-L2-V1.13) has been migrated to meet PDS4 standards. The dataset was originally developed with the PDS3 standard and submitted to PDS on two CD-ROM-sized volumes (mg_5002 and mg_5003). Two volumes were used to store the dataset because of the CD-ROM size limitation of about 650 MB. However, the dataset is not big by modern computer and online storage capabilities. Thus, the two volumes have been combined into one PDS4 bundle during the migration. Please read pds4_migration_notes.pdf for more information about the migration. The RSS LOSAPDR data products consist of data from Doppler tracking of the orbiting spacecraft. The relative motion of the spacecraft and the earth-based radio receiver is measured very precisely, and known motions are removed a priori (i.e. earth rotation, planetary motions, spacecraft orbital motion, solar pressure, drag), leaving small velocity changes caused by variations in the mass distribution of the planet. The residual Doppler frequency shifts are linearly proportional to the component of velocity in the Earth direction. Numerical differentiation of these velocity residuals with respect to time produces line-of-sight (LOS) gravity. These measures are accelerations at spacecraft altitude which can be modeled for geophysical interpretation.

RSS LOSAPDR products have the following file names:

L = product type = LOSAPDR

nnnnn = five-digit zero-filled, right-justified (z.f.r.j.) orbit number

0 = one-digit fractional orbit number, 0 for Magellan data

vv = version number of the product, begin with 01 and are incremented by 1 for each subsequent version
