Search, View, Download Tutorial

This tutorial will show how to:

  • search for a product

  • view product information

  • select products for download

  • download the products

NOTE: All examples from ODE Mars. This tutorial was updated January 2026. Direct questions to ode@wunder.wustl.edu.

1. Open ODE: https://ode.rsl.wustl.edu/mars

2. Select Data Products Search tab

Select the Data Products Search tab at the top of the page – it is second tab.

3. Data Product Search Page

The data product search page uses a faceted search style to update a running total of matching products as data sets are selected and filters are applied. The summary is found along the right side of the page. As search criteria are adjusted, the matching product counts are displayed next to each data set and available filtering ranges are displayed next search filters. The first step is to select a starting data set or data sets to search, which are found under "Step 1 of the page". The second step allows additional filters to be applied, including location filters. The "Step 3 Results Summary" is updated to display applied filters and the running total of results from the selected filters. The forth step is to view the search results in a text-based search result list or an interactive map search interface. We will review these steps in more detail.

4. Select Data Sets

We’re going to search for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) products of the CRISM, CTX, and HiRISE instruments of a location and time range. To do this, first expand the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter section, and select the items, as displayed in the following screen capture.

CRISM -> Calibrated Data - > PDS3 Targeted Empirical Record (TER)
CTX -> Raw and Derived Data -> PDS3 Experiment Data Record (EDR)
HiRISE -> Derived Data -> PDS3 Reduced Data Record with Embedded Map Projection (RDRV11)

On the right side, you will see the results summary has been updated to include your selections and their total.

5. Demonstrate Filter by Product ID, Product LID, or partial value

Next, we will do quick demonstration of filtering results by PDS3 product id, PDS4 product LID, or partial value. Under the Step 2, additional filters, expand the "Filter By Product ID or Product LID" section.

The asterisk (*) is used as a wild card value. For this test, enter *tr* to the text box, and then click outside of the box to initiate a refresh of the search results. The count is updated, and the filter can be seen in the results summary section.

We do not want to keep this filter, so click the "Clear Value" button, and the filter will be removed.

6. Filter by Location

Location filters can be applied by selecting names of features from the USGS Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature, manually entering lat/lon restrictions, or selecting a custom location through an interactive map interface. These filters return products that intersect the selected area.

For this example, select "Chaos" for the feature type, and Eos Chaos for the feature name. This will automatically populate the appropriate latitude and longitude range.

You will see the results summary's filtered product count and list of filters have been updated.

7. Add a Time Range Filter

Next, let’s enter the observation time limit. Open the “Filter by Time Range” bar by clicking it. You will see the displayed ranges have already been filtered to available ranges for your current product selections. Enter “2009-03” into the first box and "2012-09" into the second box to further filter the product search results to this range. Click outside both boxes to refresh total counts and filters that are visible in the results summary. We could alternatively apply a filter based on when the product files were created using the drop down box, rather than the default observation time.

8. Results Summary

Review the results summary to see the total filtered product count, applied filters, along with the number of products in each filtered data set.

Filters can be removed by clicking on them. Also, filters can be modified in any order.

9. View Results

We have the option of viewing the search results in a table or a map search interface. We will start with viewing results in a table. It is often quicker to navigate.

10. Search Results List

The search results list contains options above a table of results. The right side is used to display selected product details.

The entire list can be added to the cart for later download by using the "Add All Results to Cart" (2). One page of results can be added by clicking the select all check box (1) at the top of the row of check boxes. A single product can be added by checking it's selection box.

For this example, select a hand full of products' checkboxes, so they display the "In Cart" next to the product listings.

11. View Product Detail Page

Click the product ID of the first listed product. The product's details will be displayed on the right side of the page. From here we can further explore the product's details.

The product detail page contains a collapsed section of more detail of the product description and links to further information. Click on it to expand the section.

When expanded, you will see the product description, the DOI of the archive collection, data set or data bundle documentation, links to the product's information in the PDS API (if available), and direct links to the online archive directory structure.

Collapse this the previous details section.

If a browse version of the product is available, it will be displayed on the first tab of the details page.

The next section of the browse tab contains buttons to add or remove the product from your cart. If the product is not in your cart, click the "Add Product to Cart" button. You will see the page update to indicate this, as well as the product status in the result list.

If the Geosciences Node hosts the displayed product, the option to download the product using Aspera high-speed data download software will be presented. It requires a few steps to install a free client application on your system. It works on Mac, Linux, and Windows. The Aspera software uses multiple download streams to better utilize your network capacity to download files. More details for installing and using Aspera through ODE can be found here.

At this stage you can also download specific product files by clicking on the file name.

You can also view the available derived files for this product by clicking the “Derived Files” tab. These files are map projection files for the product, so you can visualize their location in your local GIS tool.

Basic product meta data is displayed below the direct file links.

The Meta Data tab includes a fuller list of product meta data. ODE processing notes are included at the bottom of the list. The notes include details about how some product information was extracted from the product label and archive location.

The page's Label tab displays the product label for quick reference, whether it is in PDS3 or PDS4 format.

Some product detail pages will contain a Related Products tab. This tab will list any related products, whether source products, coordinated with products, or products derived from the currently viewed product. These products can be viewed and added to your cart, as desired.

If a product is map projected, a Map Context tab is displayed on the detail page. The tab provides access to an interactive map for viewing the product's footprint. It can be opened to a new browser window, if desired.

Sometimes you may want to save a direct link to a product in ODE or share the link with a colleague. The share links icon provides the link to the product detail for a new window, to the clipboard or an email. Give it a try!

12. Transfer to Map Search

From this point, if some or all of our search results are map projected, we can transfer from the text-based product search results list to the products in the map interface. Scroll to the top of the search results list and click the "View on Map" button.

The "View on Map" button takes you to the Map Search interface, populated with the search criteria and results from our text-based product search. The initial view will display the selected area, and the list of search results. A summary of results is listed above the list of products.

13. Selecting a Smaller Search Location

You can further refine the search location by selecting a point, rectangle, or free-form shape to draw on the map.

We will test selecting a smaller location. Please click the rectangle selection. Then click on a smaller location of the area that is already highlighted. Drag the mouse, with the left button selected to draw your smaller rectangle. When it is the desired sized, lift up on the left button, so the drawing will be complete and the results will be queried. You will see the result list is updated with the products intersecting the new location.

The results list in the map search works similar to the data product search results. All the results can be added to the cart, the list can be sorted, product detail pages can be viewed on a new browser tab by clicking their product ID, or a quick view of the detail page can be displayed as a temporary modal window over the map interface.

Example of modal quick view of a product detail page. From here you can view all of the product details, add and remove it from the cart. Close this window with the x in the upper right corner.

Now let's turn on another data set map coverage layer. On the left side of the map search, you will see three buttons. The first icon button displays the availability and selected map layers. This includes feature layers of the data sets, named nomenclature, and base maps. The second icon button displays additional filters that are applied, such as product name filtering, date time, and observation angle. The third icon button is our current display of the search results list.

14. Toggle Visible Map Layers

Click the first icon button to view the data set map coverage layers tab. This tab contains four primary sections.

1. The option to only display selected product footprints on the map. This can be helpful if you don't want to see potentially thousands of footprints that are outside your selected area. It can also improve performance if you are exploring in the map search.

2. The Feature Layer option can be selected to see markers of the locations of landers and named nomenclature on the map.

3. The available map layers with footprints provide a list similar to the product search, except only data sets that are map projected are provided. As these layers are toggled on, their coverage results will be displayed. If an area selection has been made, the products of the selected area will be listed in the search results tab.

4. The available basemaps section contains image mosaic basemaps that have been formatted to the same map projection. One or more basemaps can be displayed. Their transparency level is adjustable under the "show details" link of each basemap.

For a test, expand the Available Map Layers with footprints -> Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter -> CRISM -> Derived section, and select Map-Projected Targeted Reduced Data Records (MTRDR). This action will cause that feature layer to be visible. If products of the layer intersect your selection area, a yellow message of "Click to view New Search Results" will be displayed. You can click that message to view the map search's result list of products.

After clicking the "View New Search Results" message, you will be taken to the results list. You can add any desired products to the cart.

15. Additional Filters

Next, let's click the second icon button on the left that displays the additional filters that are applied. The top section would allow you to zoom to a different planetary named feature. The rest of the filters are for applying or updating the same filters as the product search page. On the map search, these filters must by applied with a button at the bottom of the page. There are buttons to apply filters, remove filters (still populated by not applied), or clear the fields.

Change the date range to start at 2010-03, and press the "Apply Filter" button. You will see the map interface update. If new products are found, the yellow "View Search Results" message should be displayed.

An example of the updated results list, where you can add one or more products to your cart.

16. Returning to Product Search Results List

To view these results back in the text based search results list, you could click the "View in Table" button.

Once back on the product search result list, you could return the map search results by clicking the "View on Map" button again.

Feel free to explore the map more. Here is a link to the map help, or you can click the “Map Help” button in the tool bar for more details. The speed of the map is dependent on your internet connection and the complexity of your map search activities. Take your time until you know how the map system will perform. Just rapidly clicking on buttons and the map is counter productive.

17. Download Files - Cart Process

Now let’s download the products in your cart. Select the “Download” tab at the top of any page:

The Download tab link will take you to the Cart Checkout page. Files available through the PDS and ODE are free to download and use. There are some basic size restrictions on the total size of cart requests (95GB per request), so the system will be able to fulfill your requests in a reasonable time.

The page contains basic options for emptying the cart, viewing cart contents, adding additional support information, and some product types support special case download options.

Open the Expand Products Selected for Download section by clicking on it. From this location you could remove individual products from the cart by deselecting their check boxes and clicking the "Remove Unchecked Products from the Cart". Close this section after taking a look.

The next section contains options for supporting files and special options associated with specific product types.

See the following image for the following highlighted items.

1. MRO CTX products offer specific options of including the original raw EDR versions or derived non-PDS version from the ASU Mars Space Flight Facility's Mars Image Explorer. Go ahead and select similar options to the following image, if you have CTX products in your cart.

2. Options to add supporting files Derived Files, and Min-Archive files are available. The derived files are map projects shape files and KML files for each map projected product in your cart. The mini-archive files are catalog, calibration, and product type documentation information for the data sets of the products in your cart. The mini-archive files can be especially helpful for users who are new to working with a particular data set. Select either option that interests you.

Click the continue button to proceed with the checkout process. Also, note that the "advanced user options" link is available to provide you with options for downloading a list of URLs to the files in your cart request for direct download or acquiring an HTML version of the list of products in your cart, along with links to the products' files. The file list option can be very helpful if you have selected more files than can be downloaded in the cart request. More information about the advanced options can be found here.

18. Download Setup Page

The Download Setup page allows you to select the packaging option (Zip, Tar, Tar.Gz, or no compression) and select the file organization. Depending on your project, you may want all of the products grouped into one directory or you may wish to have it grouped by relative path based on the structure of the online archives. After making your selections, enter your email address and submit the request.

19. Order Submitted

After submitting the request, a download request confirmation page is displayed. It includes a link to a page where you can view the status of your cart request through the fulfillment process.

The Geosciences Node's services organize your requested files and place them into a convenient location for your download. If we do not host the files in our archives, we must first download the files from remove archive locations, which could take minutes to hours. You can get updates of the progress from the displayed link. Also, earlier in the checkout process, a time estimate for fulfilling your request was provided.

20. Request Status Update Page

The request status page displays a fulfillment status, and once the request is available, it includes a link to the cart request download page. You will also receive a similar email that includes the same link to download the requested files, once the are ready.

21. ODE Cart Request Download Page

The cart request download page is a centralized location where you can use various tools to download your cart request. The fulfilled cart request notification email and cart status page will direct you to this page once the order is ready for download. Aspera high-speed data transfer tool, HTTP, and FTP are available links from this page. Links to the entire cart request or specific files of the request are available on the page. Further details about this page and it's tools are available here.
