ODE Basemap Details

The Orbital Data Explorer map interface provides access to a number of different basemaps of Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Earth's moon.

The basemap mosaics were produced by different institutions. The image mosaics were further processed into a standard GIS compatible format by USGS staff. They are available through the Mars, Mercury, Venus, and Moon folders of the USGS site https://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/pub/pigpen/. The maps with Simple Cylindrical projection centered at 0 longitude were used in ODE without any changes. These maps were re-projected to different projections using ArcGIS tools for different mapping purpose of ODE. The other three projections used in ODE maps are Simple Cylindrical projection with center at 180 longitudes, north polar stereographic projection, and south polar stereographic projection. Maps in the polar stereographic projections are cut from 60N to 90N or 60S to 90S latitudes range.

USGS - Unified Geologic Map of the Moon

This map layer was published by the USGS. It is represented as two basemaps in ODE.

1. The first layer contains unit contacts, geologic unit polygons, linear features, and unit and feature nomenclature annotation.

2. The second layer, which we call the base layer is a shaded-relief product derived from SELENE Kaguya terrain camera stereo (equatorial, ~60 m/pix) and LOLA altimetry (north and south polar, 100 m/pix).

Mercury MESSENGER MDIS Global Basemap BDR

‘The Map Projected Basemap RDR (BDR) data set consists of a global monochrome map of reflectance at a resolution of 256 pixels per degree (~166 m/pixel). This edition, version 1, was released May 6, 2016 to the Planetary Data System (PDS) MESSENGER archive. It is compiled using MDIS NAC or WAC 750-nm images from any campaign that best fit the intended illumination geometry or low emission angle and incidence angle near 74°. It is controlled and projected onto a global digital elevation model.’

Mercury MESSENGER MDIS Global Basemap LOI

‘The Map Projected Low-Incidence Angle Basemap RDR (LOI) data set consists of a global monochrome map of reflectance at a resolution of 256 pixels per degree (~166 m/pixel). Each original map tile, contains a single band that merges NAC and WAC 750-nm images. This edition, version 1, was released May 13, 2016 to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory MESSENGER Team website. The original LOI mosaic was released at end of mission, is compiled in part based on images taken as a part of the global low-incidence angle imaging campaign but also includes any NAC or WAC 750-nm images from any campaign that best fit the intended illumination geometry, i.e., low emission angle and incidence angle near 45°. It is controlled and projected onto a global digital elevation model.’

Mercury MESSENGER MDIS Global Basemap Enhanced Color

This MDIS mosaic ‘shows Mercury's surface in "enhanced color," a term used to describe a color scheme created to emphasize color differences on Mercury's surface. This is not what Mercury would look like to the human eye, but rather by applying mathematical analysis to MESSENGER images, color differences on Mercury's surface can be accentuated beyond those visible to a person. This view uses a global mosaic with 430, 750, and 1000 nm bands and places the second principal component, the first principal component, and the 430/1000 ratio in the red, green, and blue channels respectively.’

Mercury MESSENGER MDIS Global Basemap MD3 Color Mosaic

‘This mosaic shows Mercury's colors as viewed by placing images from MESSENGER's 1000 nm, 750 nm, and 430 nm narrow-band filters in the red, green, and blue channel respectively. This is not what Mercury would look like to the human eye, but rather by using a wider range of wavelengths, color differences on Mercury's surface can be accentuated beyond those visible to a person.

The 3-color Map Projected Multispectral RDR (MD3) data set consists of a mosaicked global color map of 3-color image sets, as reflectance corrected to i = 30º, e = 0º, and g = 30º sampled at a scale of 128 pixels per degree, compiled from images taken as a part of the regional 3-color map campaign. This is version 1 of the map, delivered at end of mission. Instead of the value from any single image being used at a particular pixel location in a given wavelength band, the value used is the average from all of the images at that location where criteria for image scale, photometric geometry, and detector temperature are met.’

Mercury MESSENGER Global Colorized Shade-relief Map

This is a colorized shaded-relief of the original global digital elevation model (DEM), which was ‘derived using the Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers (ISIS3) and observations from Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) narrow-angle camera (NAC) and multispectral wide-angle camera (WAC)’. The global DEM of Mercury was created ‘from a least-squares bundle adjustment (jigsaw in ISIS3 [Becker 2016]) of common features, measured as tie point coordinates in overlapping NAC and WAC-G filter images’.
