The Radio Science Subsystem (RSS) Spherical Harmonics Binary Data Record (SHBDR) data products are intended to be general and may contain coefficients for spherical harmonic expansions of gravity, topography, magnetic, and other fields.

SHBDR files are created from radio tracking, vertical sounding, in situ, and/or other measurements at the institution conducting the scientific data analysis. Each model requires data with complete sampling (in terms of longitude and latitude coverage on the planet), so that SHBDR files will be issued infrequently and on schedules which cannot be predicted at this time.

In general, the SHBDR is recommended over the Spherical Harmonics Gravity ASCII Data Record (SHADR) when the data include error covariances because of the smaller data volume associated with binary formats.

RSS SHBDR products have the following file names:

GGMES_nnVxx_SHB.DAT (with detached PDS label)

where:

G = generating institution

J = Jet Propulsion Laboratory

G = Goddard Space Flight Center

C = Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales

M = Massachusetts Institute of Technology

G = type of data represented

G = gravity field

T = topography

M = magnetic field

MES = 3-character spacecraft modifier

nn = 2- or 3-digit maximum degree and order of the solution

Vxx = 2-digit version number

In ODE, SHADR products have the following product IDs:

ggmes_nnvxx_shb
