The MESSENGER Radio Science (RS) experiment consists of radio observations carried out using the MESSENGER spacecraft and Earth-based observing systems of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). The observations are designed to generate high-resolution gravity field models of Mercury.
MESSENGER Radio Science EDR Products that use the PDS3 standard:
Type |
Description |
PDS3 Data Set |
Delta-Differential One-way Range Data Record. See page 4 and section 2.1 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Compressed Version of TNF - typically to one data point per 10 seconds or one data point per 60 seconds. The ODF contains the most important information (range, Doppler and frequency ramps) needed by the navigation engineers, and investigators interested in determining gravity fields. See page 4 and section 2.1 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Radio Science Receiver Record. See page 4 and section 2.1 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Tracking and Navigation File (TRK-2-34 data). See page 4 and section 2.1 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
MESSENGER Radio Science EDR Ancillary Products that use the PDS3 standard:
Type |
Description |
PDS3 Data Set |
ACK |
An obsolete product containing antenna configuration information. Much of the data in these products are incorrect. The ANT product replaces these. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Antenna Configuration file. Text file containing the antenna configuration based on spacecraft telemetry. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Ionosphere (media) calibration files, providing historical and predicted Earth ionospheric conditions. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Light time files providing the radio propagation time from the spacecraft to the Earth and from the Earth to the spacecraft vs. time. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Momentum Dump Maneuver file, which contains summary information on each angular momentum dump. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Maneuver Performance Data Files, which contain estimates of spacecraft mass and center of mass; moments of inertia; thruster locations, directions, and magnitudes; and propellant flow rate. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Small forces files, contain details of each maneuver. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
Troposphere (media) calibration files, providing historical and predicted Earth troposphere conditions. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
DSN weather files give weather calibration information for DSN complexes. See section 2.2 of the RS EDR Data Product SIS for more information. |
