The Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) onboard the ESA Mars Express spacecraft was originally intended as an engineering camera to monitor the release of the Beagle-2 lander, but has subsequently been used for outreach and scientific purposes. In 2016 it was designated a science instrument. The instrument records gray-scale images and color images using a Bayer grid to provide monitoring of large scale features on Mars, such as clouds, dust, and surface ice cover. The VMC science team lead is Agustin Sanchez-Lavega, University of Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain.
