For more information about MAG DATAL3 products, see the Lunar Prospector Regional Field Bins at the Spacecraft Altitude Data Description.
The Lunar Prospector Magnetometer (LP-MAG) Level 3 Data (DATAL3) data products are regional field bins at the S/C altitude. Interpolation and two-dimensional filtering are applied to the Level 2 data (DATAL2) to produce gridded field component data files on a surface defined by the slowly varying S/C altitude. The spatial resolution of the grid is chosen to be much less than the mean S/C altitude.
The measured parameters consist of the three vector components of the lunar crustal magnetic in East, North, and Radial (ENR) coordinates, the field magnitude, and the spacecraft altitude. The units of the field measurements are nanoTeslas (nT). 1 nT = 0.00001 Gauss. The units of the spacecraft altitude are kilometers (km). ENR coordinates are centered at the instantaneous spacecraft location with X directed eastward, Y directed northward, and Z directed radial to the moon.
MAG DATAL3 1998 data products have the following file names:
MAP98_mmx_ttt.TAB (with detached PDS label)
where:
mm = month (01-12)
x = optional map letter for this month
ttt = data type
RAD = radial B component
EAS = east B component
NOR = north B component
TOT = total B
ALT = altitude
MAG DATAL3 1999 data products have one of the following file names:
MAP99_ddd-eeex_ttt.TAB (for single day, with detached PDS labels)
MAP99_dddx_ttt.TAB (for range of days, with detached PDS labels)
where:
ddd = day or first day in range
eee = last day in range
x = optional map letter
In ODE, DATAL3 products have one of the following product IDs:
MAP98_MMX_TTT
MAP99_DDD-EEEX_TTT
MAP99_DDDX_TTT
