ODE: Moon

Mission: Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)

PDS Geosciences Node: PDS Source Information

Instrument: LOLA Web Site

Instrument Team Site: LOLA Team Web Site

The Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) will produce a high-resolution global topographic model and geodetic framework that enables precise targeting, safe landing, and surface mobility to carry out exploratory activities. LOLA will characterize the polar illumination environment and image permanently shadowed polar regions of the Moon to identify possible locations of surface ice crystals in shadowed polar craters.

NOTE: ODE Presents the data from the LOLA Data Node.  In addition, the PDS Geosciences has a "snapshot" copy available.  The snapshot is generated every three months with the rest of the LRO release.

NOTE: As per the label, height values are scaled and offset.  Please review label note on HEIGHT conversion:

 /* NOTE:                                                                   */

 /* Conversion from Digital Number to HEIGHT, i.e. elevation in meters, is: */

 /* HEIGHT = (DN * SCALING_FACTOR).                                         */

 /* The conversion from Digital Number to PLANETARY_RADIUS in meters is:    */

 /* PLANETARY_RADIUS = (DN * SCALING_FACTOR) + OFFSET                       */

 /* where OFFSET is the radius of a reference sphere.                       */

 /* The planetopotential TOPOGRAPHY is PLANETARY_RADIUS - GEOID_RADIUS,     */

 /* where GEOID_RADIUS is derived from a gravitational equipotential model. */

 /* By convention, the average GEOID_RADIUS at the equator is OFFSET.       */

The LOLA team has included a set of “extra” products that include maps of the coefficients that indicate a measure of surface roughness at http://imbrium.mit.edu/EXTRAS/FRACTAL/. These products are available through ODE as GDRHE and GDRMAS products.  See the README_FRACTAL.TXT for a description of these extra products.

NOTE: As per the label, surface roughness value is scaled.  Please see the label for more details.

Roughness = DN * SCALING_FACTOR

Additional information and resources:

Internet access to LOLA data set volumes

In addition to access to the LOLA archive, ODE offers both individual derived products and the LOLA RDR Query tool (See About Data Databases and LOLA RDR Query Tool)  found under the Tab tools.  LOLA RDR derived products are organized as either frames with up to 5 measurements or “points” per frame.  There are several types of derived products:

Frame per row Formatted CSV Table.  A formatted CSV table can be viewed with a standard text editor with each frame found in a row and the frame data fields in columns.  The CSV file can also be viewed using spreadsheet tools such as Excel.
Point per row CSV with all associated point and frame data
Simple Topography CSV file listing location, time, and topography value
Binned Image
Shapefile
